THE NOW-LIFE
THEORY

1. Consciousness and the Now

The Now-Life Theory understands consciousness as:

a state in which experience arises intrinsically.

Language, personality, and a self-image are not required for consciousness to exist. Human beings can recall the past and imagine the future. Yet the consciousness experiencing them is always in the Now.

Consciousness can exist only in the Now.

The existence of physical change, however, is not the same as its appearing as the "Now." The Now-Life Theory calls the present that is manifest to consciousness the Now.

Without consciousness, the "Now" does not arise.

Consciousness requires the Now, and the Now requires consciousness. The Now and consciousness are conditions for each other's existence.

2. Nothingness and the Big Bang

The Now-Life Theory posits that before the Big Bang there was:

nothingness.

Nothingness is a state in which space, the Now, consciousness, and existence have not yet arisen. From it, the Big Bang occurred.

The Big Bang was the moment when the first "Now" and the first "consciousness" arose.

The theory does not separate whether the Now came first or consciousness came first. Both arose together with the beginning of the universe.

3. Root Consciousness and Cosmic Life

The first consciousness, which arose with the birth of the universe, is called:

Root Consciousness.

The Now-Life Theory understands Root Consciousness as:

one integrated experience arising at the level of the universe as a whole.

Rocks and atoms are parts that constitute the whole called the universe. The theory does not regard each of them as possessing an independent Root Consciousness.

Just as a single consciousness arises through the integrated brain rather than through each neuron in isolation, the Now-Life Theory holds that Root Consciousness arises in the integrated unit of the universe as a whole.

The present manifest to that Root Consciousness is called:

the Cosmic Now.

Here, "one Now" does not mean that a single physical time is shared throughout the universe. It means:

the present in which the entire universe is manifest as a single experience within Root Consciousness.

Its physical existence is the universe. The Now-Life Theory calls the entire universe existing together with Root Consciousness and the Cosmic Now:

Cosmic Life.

The universe itself is the first life.

4. Individual Life and Individual Memory

New life emerged from within Cosmic Life. The Now-Life Theory calls a life that possesses an individual body and forms, retains, and accesses experience as memory:

Individual Life.

The memory belonging uniquely to that individual is called:

Individual Memory.

Matter such as stone has no living mechanism that forms, retains, and continuously accesses Individual Memory. The theory therefore does not regard a stone itself as possessing Individual Consciousness.

Immediately after an Individual Life is born, the capacity to access Individual Memory is scarcely developed. Individual Consciousness is therefore still weak and is thought to be in:

a state close to Root Consciousness.

5. Individual Consciousness

Individual Life grows and accumulates experience. What matters is not the amount of Individual Memory itself, but:

the activity of continuously accessing Individual Memory.

Who am I? What have I experienced? What do I desire? What do I fear?

Through repeated access to Individual Memory, the self is formed. As a result, the consciousness unique to the individual comes to the foreground. This is called:

Individual Consciousness.

Individual Consciousness is the consciousness unique to an individual, formed through continuous access to Individual Memory.

6. Root Consciousness and Individual Consciousness

If Root Consciousness is compared to the source of a fire that burns for an immense span of time, Individual Consciousness is like a spark that appears from it for only a moment and eventually vanishes.

Root Consciousness exists through the vast duration of Cosmic Life. Individual Consciousness exists temporarily together with Individual Life.

It is not yet known, however, whether Individual Consciousness branches from Root Consciousness or arises anew with the birth of Individual Life.

Every Individual Consciousness exists within the same Cosmic Now as Root Consciousness.

7. Returning Toward Root Consciousness

Even after Individual Consciousness has formed, consciousness can again move deeply toward the Now.

Through deep immersion, thoughts of past and future, self-referential thought, and the sense of being a self grow weaker. Individual Memory itself does not disappear at this time.

The activity of continually accessing Individual Memory weakens.

As a result, Individual Consciousness fades and:

approaches Root Consciousness.

At that moment, a person does not newly connect with the universe. From the beginning, the person has existed within the same Now as Root Consciousness.

What changes is not the connection itself, but the boundary of individuality formed by Individual Consciousness.

8. Root Memory

Root Consciousness may also possess memory. This is called:

Root Memory.

In deep states of consciousness, experiences can arise that cannot be explained by one's own life: I was the universe. I became one with the universe. I understood the universe. I knew all things.

The Now-Life Theory understands these experiences as:

the possibility of approaching Root Consciousness deeply and touching Root Memory.

Root Memory may be the memory possessed by Cosmic Life itself. At present, this remains a hypothesis.

9. Depth

Approach toward Root Consciousness has degrees of depth. This is called:

Depth.

At a shallow Depth, one approaches Root Consciousness while retaining Individual Consciousness to some extent. As Depth increases, self-reference and the boundary of individuality weaken, and Root Consciousness and Root Memory appear more strongly.

The Now-Life Theory holds that:

The greater the Depth, the closer one comes to the fundamental truth of the universe.

Yet as Depth increases, Individual Consciousness also weakens. The capacities to put the experience into language, remember it, and retain it as "my experience" also weaken.

The more deeply one touches it, the harder it becomes to bring it back as Individual Memory.

This is an important consequence derived from the Now-Life Theory.

10. Is Root Consciousness the Ground of Consciousness?

It is not yet known whether Individual Consciousness branches directly from Root Consciousness. Yet it is also difficult to regard the two as completely unrelated.

Every Individual Consciousness exists within the same Now as Root Consciousness. When Individual Consciousness fades, experiences in which the boundary with the universe disappears can arise.

From this, the Now-Life Theory proposes:

the possibility that Root Consciousness is the ground from which individual consciousness arises.

11. The Now-Life Theory

The structure of The Now-Life Theory v2 is simple.

At first, there was nothingness. From it came the Big Bang. At that moment, the Now and Root Consciousness arose.

Root Consciousness is one integrated experience arising at the level of the universe as a whole. The present manifest to Root Consciousness is the Cosmic Now. Its physical existence is the universe.

The entire universe together with Root Consciousness and the Cosmic Now is called Cosmic Life. From within Cosmic Life emerged Individual Life.

Immediately after Individual Life is born, the capacity to access Individual Memory is barely developed, so Individual Consciousness remains close to Root Consciousness. Through growth, self-reference to Individual Memory forms Individual Consciousness.

When one enters the Now deeply and access to Individual Memory weakens, Individual Consciousness also fades and approaches Root Consciousness again.

At greater Depth, there is the possibility of touching Root Memory. At that time, experiences of being the universe or understanding the universe can arise.

As Depth increases, one approaches the root while it becomes more difficult to bring what was obtained there back as Individual Memory.

Conclusion

Consciousness can exist only in the Now. The Now likewise cannot arise as the "Now" without consciousness. The Now and consciousness are conditions for each other's existence.

With the birth of the universe, the first Now and the first consciousness arose. That consciousness is Root Consciousness.

Root Consciousness is one integrated experience arising at the level of the universe as a whole. The present manifest in that experience is the Cosmic Now. The universe as a whole is called Cosmic Life.

Individual Life born within it forms Individual Consciousness through self-reference to Individual Memory. When that self-reference weakens, Individual Consciousness also fades and approaches Root Consciousness.

In still deeper states, one may touch Root Memory, giving rise to experiences of unity with the universe or of understanding the universe.

Human beings do not connect with the universe through altered states of consciousness. They have existed within the Cosmic Now from the beginning.

What changes is not the connection itself. What had stood between them was Individual Consciousness.

Universe. Life. Consciousness. Memory. Everything is connected through the Now.

1. 意識と今

今生命論では、意識を、

経験が内在的に生じている状態

と捉える。言語、人格、自己像は、意識の成立に必須ではない。人は過去を思い出し、未来を想像できる。

しかし、それを経験している意識そのものは、常に今にある。

意識は、今でしか成立しない。

一方、物理的な変化が存在することと、それが「今」として現れることは同じではない。今生命論では、意識に現前する現在を、「今」と捉える。

意識がなければ、「今」も成立しない。

意識には今が必要であり、今には意識が必要である。今と意識は、互いの成立条件である。

2. 無とビッグバン

今生命論では、ビッグバン以前を、

無

と置く。無とは、空間も、今も、意識も、存在も成立していない状態である。そこから、ビッグバンが起きた。

ビッグバンとは、最初の「今」と最初の「意識」が成立した瞬間である。

今が先か、意識が先かは分けない。両者は、宇宙の始まりとともに成立した。

3. 根源意識と宇宙生命

宇宙の誕生とともに成立した、最初の意識を、

根源意識

と呼ぶ。今生命論では、根源意識を、

宇宙全体に成立する、統合された一つの経験

として捉える。石や原子は、宇宙という全体を構成する部分である。それぞれが、独立した根源意識を持つとは考えない。

神経細胞一つひとつではなく、統合された脳全体として一つの意識が成立するように、今生命論では、根源意識も、宇宙全体という統合された単位に成立すると考える。

そして、その根源意識に現前する現在を、

宇宙の今

と呼ぶ。ここでいう、「一つの今」は、宇宙全体で物理的な時刻が共通しているという意味ではない。

根源意識において、宇宙全体が一つの経験として現前している現在

を意味する。その物理的存在が、宇宙である。今生命論では、この、根源意識と宇宙の今を伴って存在する宇宙全体を、

宇宙生命

と呼ぶ。したがって、

宇宙そのものが、最初の生命である。

4. 個体生命と固有記憶

宇宙生命の内部から、新たな生命が生まれた。今生命論では、個別の身体を持ち、経験を記憶として形成・保持・参照する生命を、

個体生命

と呼ぶ。その個体だけが持つ記憶を、

固有記憶

と呼ぶ。石などの物質には、固有記憶を形成し、保持し、継続的に参照する生命的な仕組みがない。そのため、石そのものに、固有意識があるとは考えない。

一方、個体生命が誕生した直後は、固有記憶への参照がほとんど形成されていない。そのため、固有意識はまだ弱く、

根源意識に近い状態

にあると考える。

5. 固有意識

個体生命は成長し、経験を蓄積する。重要なのは、固有記憶の量そのものではない。

固有記憶を継続的に参照する働き

である。私は何者か。何を経験したか。何を望むか。何を恐れるか。

固有記憶を繰り返し参照することで、自己が形成される。その結果、個体固有の意識が前面に現れる。これを、

固有意識

と呼ぶ。つまり、

固有意識とは、固有記憶への継続的な参照によって形成される個体固有の意識である。

6. 根源意識と固有意識

根源意識を、長く燃え続ける火の源にたとえるなら、固有意識は、そこから一瞬だけ現れ、やがて消えていく火の粉のようなものである。

根源意識は、宇宙生命とともに長大な時間を存在する。固有意識は、個体生命とともに一時的に存在する。

ただし、固有意識が、根源意識から分岐したものなのか、個体生命の誕生とともに新たに発生したものなのかは、まだ分からない。一つ言えるのは、

すべての固有意識は、根源意識と同じ宇宙の「今」の中に存在する。

ということである。

7. 再び根源意識へ

固有意識が形成された後も、意識は再び、今へ深く向かうことができる。

深い没入によって、過去や未来への思考、自己参照的な思考、自分という感覚が弱まる。このとき、固有記憶そのものが消えるわけではない。

固有記憶を参照し続ける働きが弱まる。

その結果、固有意識が薄まり、

根源意識に近づく。

人はこのとき、宇宙と新しくつながるのではない。人は最初から、根源意識と同じ今の中にいる。

変化するのは、つながりそのものではなく、固有意識によって形成されていた個としての境界である。

8. 根源記憶

根源意識にも、記憶が存在する可能性がある。これを、

根源記憶

と呼ぶ。深い意識状態では、自分自身の人生では説明できない体験が現れることがある。

自分が宇宙だった。宇宙と一つになった。宇宙を理解した。森羅万象を知った。

今生命論では、これらを、

根源意識に深く近づき、根源記憶に触れた可能性

として捉える。根源記憶とは、宇宙生命そのものが持つ記憶である可能性がある。これは、現時点では仮説である。

9. 深度

根源意識への接近には、深さがある。これを、

深度

と呼ぶ。深度が浅ければ、固有意識をある程度保ったまま、根源意識に近づく。深度が増すほど、自己参照と個の境界が弱まり、根源意識と根源記憶が、より強く現れる。

今生命論では、

深度が深いほど、宇宙の根源的な真理に近づく

と考える。しかし、深くなるほど、固有意識も弱くなる。言語化し、記憶し、「自分の体験」として保持する働きも弱くなる。

そのため、

深く触れるほど、固有記憶として持ち帰ることが難しくなる。

これは、今生命論から導かれる重要な帰結である。

10. 根源意識は意識の母体なのか

固有意識が、根源意識から直接分岐したものなのかは、まだ分からない。しかし、両者が完全に無関係であるとも考えにくい。

すべての固有意識は、根源意識と同じ今の中に存在する。そして、固有意識が薄くなると、宇宙との境界が失われる体験が現れる。

今生命論では、ここから、

根源意識は、個々の意識の母体である可能性

を置く。

11. 今生命論

今生命論 v2 の構造は、単純である。

最初は、無であった。そこから、ビッグバンが起きた。その瞬間、今と根源意識が成立した。

根源意識は、宇宙全体に成立する、統合された一つの経験である。その根源意識に現前する現在が、宇宙の今である。その物理的存在が、宇宙である。

根源意識と宇宙の今を伴う宇宙全体を、宇宙生命と呼ぶ。宇宙生命の内部から、個体生命が生まれた。

個体生命が誕生した直後は、固有記憶への参照がほとんどなく、根源意識に近い状態にある。成長すると、固有記憶への自己参照によって、固有意識が形成される。

しかし、今へ深く没入し、固有記憶への参照が弱まると、固有意識も薄まり、根源意識に再び近づく。

さらに深くなると、根源記憶に触れる可能性がある。そのとき、自分が宇宙であるという感覚や、宇宙を理解したという体験が現れる。

深度が増すほど、根源へ近づく一方で、そこで得たものを、固有記憶として持ち帰ることは難しくなる。

結論

意識は、今でしか成立しない。今もまた、意識なしには、「今」として成立しない。今と意識は、互いの成立条件である。

宇宙の誕生とともに、最初の今と、最初の意識が成立した。その意識が、根源意識である。

根源意識は、宇宙全体に成立する、統合された一つの経験である。そして、その経験に現前する現在が、宇宙の今である。その宇宙全体を、宇宙生命と呼ぶ。

その内部から生まれた個体生命は、固有記憶への自己参照によって、固有意識を形成する。しかし、その自己参照が弱まると、固有意識も薄まり、根源意識へ近づく。

さらに深い状態では、根源記憶に触れ、宇宙との一体感や、宇宙を理解したという体験が現れる可能性がある。

人は、変性意識によって宇宙とつながるのではない。最初から宇宙の今の中にいる。

変化するのは、つながりそのものではない。それを隔てていた、固有意識である。

宇宙。生命。意識。記憶。すべては「今」でつながっている。
